IPODS IN MUSIC

Technology has arrived in the elementary music classrooms with the addition of the IPod. With the help of a grant, from Monroe Excellence In Education Foundation, elementary music teachers will be able to enhance their curriculum with the use of IPods. Through the use of Itune cards the teachers can supplement their present curriculum with “affordable” music from different cultures and time periods thus merging music with other curriculums/subjects in the school. When a classroom teacher asks for music from Africa to accompany their study, it can now be “downloaded” immediately instead of searching through catalogs to find it and then waiting for it to arrive. The IPods will help to broaden the study of various styles of music by making it available with just a “click” instead of searching through shelved materials; more time can be spent teaching instead of changing the tape player. Accompanying music for concerts can be pre-recorded; no more “skips” during the performance due to a record/tape being bad. An IPod is easy to transport and has the capacity to also record students singing which adds to the total classroom learning process. Music and technology, a good “mix” thanks to a grant from Monroe Excellence In Education.

MONROE MIDDLE SCHOOL MATH CLASS GONE “TECH”

Mrs. Camie Engels’ math class at the Monroe Middle School has gone “Tech” with the Senteo Response System provided by a grant through the Monroe Excellence In Education Foundation. With a set of student remotes and receiver that work in conjunction with the SmartBoard the students can answer questions and receive immediate feedback from Mrs. Engels. This allows for immediate correction of errors rather than waiting for corrected homework the next day; if a concept needs more work it can be attacked immediately while it is still fresh in the mind. This enables the teacher to see what concepts have been mastered before moving on. The system also allows the teacher to analyze and assess the work of individual students and keep daily records of their progress. Math is more exciting and easier to learn with the interaction that is provided through the Senteo Response System.
