Make a Gift or Create a Fund?

At the Community Foundation of Southern Wisconsin, we value all charitable donations large or small. Your willingness to support your community according to your interests and ability to give is at the heart of our mission to match personal philanthropy to community needs.

Making a Gift to Your Community
We hold many component funds that welcome donations from community members. These funds focus on a wide variety of community needs across our nine-county service area. They include the Community Funds, the Excellence in Education Funds, and many specialty funds. Any donation to any of our component funds is tax deductible to the fullest extent of the law. All donations are welcome regardless of size. For more information on funds that receive community donations please visit the CONNECT section of this site.

Creating a Fund for Your Community and Beyond

Donors who have the resources may wish to go a step further and create their own component fund supporting one or more causes of their own choosing. Creating a component fund can be done with a few simple steps:

  • You make a gift to the Community Foundation. You may give cash, appreciated stocks, real estate, or other assets.
  • The Community Foundation sets up a special fund in your name, or in the name of your family or business, or in honor of any person or organization you choose.
  • You receive tax benefits in the year your gift is made.
  • With assistance from our professional program staff, you recommend uses for the fund, supporting the causes and organizations you care about most.
  • Your recommendations are presented to the Community Foundation board for approval.
  • The Community Foundation handles all the administrative details and, in accordance with our distribution policy, issues grants to charities in the name of the fund you establish. If you prefer, grants can be made anonymously.
  • Your gift can be placed into an endowment that is invested over time. Earnings from your fund are used to make grants addressing community needs. Your gift---and all future earnings from your gift---is a permanent source of community capital. For good. For ever.
