Get to Know the Evansville Fund Advisory Board

The Evansville Fund wants to introduce you to its current Advisory Board Members with a new feature, “Get to Know Us…” Advisory Board Members of our Community Funds and EIE Funds are community volunteers who give their time to the Fund in support of their local communities. Members help raise funds and review grant applications for programs and projects that benefit all of Evansville. We are grateful for their help!

Meet Nancy Nelson.

What made you decide to live in Evansville and how many years have you lived here? I grew up in Evansville and have lived here my whole life except when I was in college. I chose to live here because I wanted my children to experience the same great education I received in the Evansville Public School system and I wanted them to grow up close to my mom and dad who would be major influences in their lives.

Why did you agree to serve on the Evansville Fund Advisory Board? When the Evansville Fund was first established I was asked to serve on the board by a couple of Evansville residents that I knew and respected. I was eager to serve as I was interested in volunteering in ways that would benefit the Evansville community. At that time, the Fund was using the tag line making Evansville “A great place to live, work, and play” and I wholeheartedly agreed with that goal.

What is your favorite part about being on the Evansville Fund Advisory Board and how many years have you been serving on the Advisory Board? I have had the opportunity to meet many people while serving on the advisory board — people who I may never have had the opportunity to cross paths with otherwise. I also get joy in knowing that I am doing something for my community. I am currently serving my third term.

What three words would your friends use to describe you? Outgoing, friendly, creative.

What would we most likely find you doing on the weekend? I have a passion for garage sales and then upcycling the treasures that I find. I also love to do woodworking and refurbish furniture. I also take pride in decorating my home with the items I find.

What is one of your favorite quotes? When there is no wind, row!

What’s your favorite sport to watch and which team do you root for? I spent my career working at the UW-Madison so of course, THE BADGERS! I’m a Packer fan too!

What is your favorite way to unwind after a busy day? I unwind by doing crosswords, mind challenging online games, playing Rummicube and cards and watching Jeopardy!
